VILLAGERS planted a tree from the Woodland Trust at Sandringham as Newton started their Diamond Jubilee celebrations early.
The village, near Wisbech, will hold a day of festivities on June 3 to toast the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s reign.
But residents began their celebrations early by planting a Royal Jubilee oak sapling in the playing field near St James Church.
More than 40 people attended the planting ceremony, which included a speech from parish council chairman John Hoyles. Resident Peggy Wadley planted the tree before refreshments were held at the church.
It is hoped that a brass commemorative plaque will be unveiled by the tree on June 3.
