I refer to your "Voice of the Fens" editorial Wisbech Standard 18/7/08 concerning the threatened closure of Post Offices in the area.

You wrote about the "Woeful neglect of the issue by our councillors".

Harecroft Road Post Office is in my ward and I would be horrified if such a local amenity was lost.

When the news of the threatened closure broke on July 8 and the initial meeting was held at the post office on July 11. I was away on my annual holiday.

On my return I telephoned the owner of Harecroft Road Post Office on July 13 and spoke with her about the threat of closure, and suggested that someone from the post office may like to come to the Wisbech Town Council meeting the next evening.

On July 14 I met with the post mistress, Nisha, and she delivered and eloquent and passionate address to councillors about the threat.

On July16 I had a further telephone conversation with the owner of the post office and arranged to meet her on Tuesday 22 July along with my fellow councillor David Oliver.

The Town Mayor, Councillor Jonathan Farmer, and Councillor Simon King did attend the meeting held at the Post Office with Malcolm Moss MP on Friday 11 July.

Councillor Oliver and I have written to the Fenland Citizen to offer our support to their "Save our Post Office" campaign

In the report about the campaign in the Standard it mentions our proposed meeting which somewhat contradicts your editorial of inaction.

It should be pointed out that town councillors receive no remuneration or expenses for the work we do. We do it hopefully, for the benefit of the town in general and our wards in particular.

If anyone would like to contact any Wisbech town councillor their details can be obtained from the Town Clerk on 01945 461333
