More than 500 Star Wars fans turned out in force for midnight screenings of the new movie last night at Wisbech’s The Light Cinema.

There were lightsabers a-plenty and more than a few Yoda ears as excited movie-goers poured into the cinema, keen to be the first to watch ‘Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens’.

Garry Tibbs, deputy mayor of Wisbech, even got in on the action, donning a Jedi robe and bringing along his own lightsaber, imported from America.

He delighted fellow patrons by sparring with his brother Peter outside the cinema before the film - they were even stopped by police who wanted to admire their ‘weapons’.

Staff at the cinema joined in the fun as well, with some dressing up as characters from the films.

The movie screened to rave reviews this week, with many people delighted it has remained in the same vein as the original trilogy.

Emma McGuire, marketing co-ordinator at The Light, said: “This is a spoiler-free zone, so we won’t reveal anything about the film. Needless to say, there were a lot of smiling faces in the early hours of Thursday morning as hundreds of Star Wars fans made their way home!”

The Force Awakens was on full release from yesterday and is showing in six screens at The Light. Over 4,000 tickets have already been sold and it is set to be the top film since the cinema opened.

The cinema will be going even further tomorrow (Saturday) as it puts on a special event for the movie.

A Star Wars superfan will be sharing some of his memorabilia until mid-afternoon and there will be costumed characters in the cinema all afternoon.

You will need a valid cinema ticket for Saturday to view the memorabilia, which will be on display upstairs.
