Sold out notices on the first night’s production are becoming the norm for the Upwell Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s productions.

This year we were treated to the Mikado, set in Old Japan.

A firm favourite with the audience, soon had their feet tapping, minstrels are still wandering, three little girls are still in school, birdies continue singing in tress, and lord high executioners strut around in comical pomp.

The music was ably played by Janice Loose on keyboard, and the scenery was a master of simplicity and deftly applied brush strokes, conveyed the period.

The cast did not set a foot or note wrong. The chorus were always in place on time and not a cue was missed. The modest admission fee which included tea or coffee and biscuits during the interval, was very good value for money.

Those of us who have followed Upwell G&S Society over the years are not so much going to watch light operetta, but to see old friends doing their very best for the love of the production.

Stage and Musical directors, Mel Barlett and Pat Askew are to be congratulated on pulling this production together.
