Wisbech Wildcats’ love affair with Shelford V continued after they swept past their Cambridgeshire rivals in the second part of a Shelford double header.

Fresh from their 55-12 demolition of Shelford last weekend, the Wildcats welcomed them back to Chapel Road on Valentine’s weekend for the semi-final of the Intermediate County Cup.

Despite it being Valentine’s weekend, Wisbech showed no love for their Shelford opponents and produced a ruthless performance, hammering them 60-12 and sealing their place in the final.

The Wildcats welcomed back Mark Laws for his first game since injuring his heel at the start of the season, and Laws shone in his first game back, scoring 15 points with the boot in the victory as well as bagging himself a try.

Greg Brownlow set the tone at number eight with some thunderous hits and soon Wisbech were on the front foot.

Skipper Oliver Mackett fed Alec South, who crashed over into the corner as Wisbech began to run riot. The hosts kept the pressure on, scoring a further three tries in the first half from experienced centre John Turner, Ollie Lake and Richard Cavill.

In the second half Shelford rallied to bring the scores back to 22-12 but experienced showed and John Turner was able to make a break and pass to Charlie Holloway to extend the Wildcats lead.

In the last 20 minutes the Wildcats bench helped the intensity to increase, and Greg Brownlow picked from the base of the scrum to score.

Harry Lott, as he did throughout the game, ran a good support line to score the eighth try of the match and Josh Anderson sealed the resounding win by crashing over the line from a penalty five metres out.

Wildcats captain Oliver Mackett, who played a starring role in his side’s success, said: “It was a season defining performance from the players. A County Cup Final and a move into fourth in the league showed how much improvement Leonard Veenendaal has had on the team. It was also brilliant to welcome back some players from the wilderness whose experience really paid off.”

Head coach Leonard Veenendaal echoed his captain’s thoughts, saying: “Our resounding win on Saturday is fantastic for the club and the continuous development of our strength and depth of our senior sides.”
