WISBECH Rugby Club's head coach Steve Drawbridge believes a three-week lay off will work in his favour as he prepares his players for their biggest match of season.

Wisbech play Lowestoft and Yarmouth at Harecroft Road tomorrow for a place in the quarter-finals of the national EDF Energy Junior Vase against either Harbury or Redditch away the following weekend.

The match has been postponed twice because recent snow and ice has made the pitch unplayable and Wisbech have not played since their 16-15 Eastern Counties Division One defeat at Newmarket on January 31.

Lowestoft and Yarmouth, meanwhile, consolidated their place at the top of the division with a confidence boosting 71-5 win over Thurston on Saturday.

Drawbridge said: "I have a full squad to choose from and the players are absolutely gagging to get out there.

"My only problem has been making sure they don't batter each other too much in training.

"I'm not taking anything from Lowestoft and Yarmouth's win on Saturday. I know they are a good side and Thurston are one of the weaker teams in the division. That will have no bearing on the Vase match."

Lowestoft and Yarmouth have recruited many players from North Walsham, who were relegated from the National Third Division to London Division One last season.

Drawbridge said: "We've had some very good training sessions and the players are sharp and focused. We know what they're about. They are a physical, forward orientated side and we've been working on ways to deal with that.

"We've got so much quality and it will be a real headache for me to pick a squad and a starting team and I hope a big crowd can turn up to cheer us on. It could make a big difference."

Wisbech seconds will play a Norfolk Premier Merit Table match against Norwich at Harecroft Road, prior to the Vase clash.

A bar and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The big match kicks off at 2pm.
