WISBECH Town may be hoping for a top-six finish in the Ridgeons Premier Division but the Fenmen already stand proudly at the top of another division - the league’s attendance table.

Whilst Dereham Town, Leiston, Haverhill Rovers and Wroxham are ahead of Wisbech in the league, the ninth-placed Fenmen are streets ahead when it comes to loyal support.

With a highest league attendance of 405 this season - and an average of 275 - the club’s support dwarfs title-chasing Dereham Town, the league’s second best-supported outfit, who only attract an average of 174.

An attendance of 405 would not look out of place in the Blue Square North or South - three steps higher than Wisbech in the non-league football pyramid.

Over 2,700 spectators have passed through the Tom Wood’s Beer Fenland Stadium’s gates during their 10 home league games this season. And more than 600 turned up for the Fenmen’s debut at their new ground when Steve Appleby’s side thrashed St Andrews 5-0 in an FA Cup preliminary round tie in August.

The support has not gone unrecognised by board members who praised the “excellent gates” achieved this season during the club’s fans forum earlier this month.

Even hotly-rated midfielder Callum Reid - who stepped down a level to join the club from Stamford - noticed the club’s growing fanbase after joining the Fenmen.

Reed said: “Stamford may be at a level higher but I think Wisbech are a bigger club.

“There’s the new ground, a bigger fanbase and the players and manager are all just as ambitious as me.”

It seems there is no denying that the Fenmen are a sleeping giant who have the support on and off the pitch to move back up the non-league ladder.
