Gary Setchell believes Wisbech Town can go all the way in the FA Vase after his side booked their spot in the last 32 of the competition on Saturday.
The Fenmen netted twice in the second half through Alex Beck and a Sam Murphy penalty to seal a 2-0 win over Racing Club Warwick and set up a tie with either Bromsgrove Sporting or Coventry United in the fourth round on January 6. The two midlands sides play a replay on Wednesday (December 6).
And manager Setchell - who reached the semi-finals of the competition with King’s Lynn Town six years ago – thinks his side are contenders to lift the trophy at Wembley in May.
“There are no easy games but we’re not an easy game. There are 32 teams left in the competition and probably all 32 of them that can go all the way because this is cup football and you’re only three games away from the semi-finals,” he said.
“I never felt we were in any serious trouble. We looked compact and solid. We had numerous suspensions and unavailability but we managed to pull together and get a fantastic result for the football club, the boys and everyone else.
“You come away from home against midlands sides and you expect a battle and they didn’t disappoint us.
“We knew exactly what they were going to be like. We had three or four players struggling with injuries I had to chuck in. It was a blood and thunder game, both sides wanted to win.
“We kept tight for 60 or 70 minutes then changed the formation late on to go for the win because I felt that with our injuries that we’d struggle with extra times so we went all or bust and luckily the two strikers combined for the first goal.
“We hit them on the counter attack, went 2-0 up and from then Bazza (goalkeeper Paul Bastock) didn’t have to make a save.”
Wisbech turn their attentions back to the UCL Premier Division this weekend and a home tie against Eynesbury Rovers on Saturday (3pm).
Seventh-place Eynesbury are one place and one point behind Wisbech and have won five of their last six games in all competitions.
