Wisbech Town forward Jack Friend says he is relieved to find the net after he bagged an excellent second-half hat-trick against Potton United last weekend.

The former Peterborough United youngster ended a six-match goal drought with a treble in the Fenmen’s 4-1 United Counties Knock Out cup success, and says that finally breaking his duck came as a big relief.

“I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” the 19-year-old said.

“I’ve been waiting for a while to get on the score-sheet and hopefully I can kick on now.”

Wisbech fell behind at the Fenland Stadium to a Stuart Gillies strike, but Michael Frew equalised with his fourth goal of the campaign.

The Fenmen went into the break level, but Friend soon notched the first of his three goals when his cross found its way into the back of the net from 25 yards.

Friend had his second 11 minutes later when he finished with aplomb after a Frew flick-on, and he completed his treble 20 minutes from time when he finished smartly after a Harry Limb shot was only partially cleared.

“Everyone will say the first one is a cross!” said Friend.

“With the second one I managed to dink it over the ‘keeper when one-on-one and I slotted it home after the ball came across for the third.

“We were a bit sloppy in the first half. They were well up for it but in the second half I think conditions got a bit better.

“There was a bit of water on the pitch which meant we could pop the ball about more which benefited us.”

The Wisbech-born striker is now looking to fire the in-form Fenmen to glory with a double-figure goals return.

Friend said: “I would love to score 20 plus and I think I can do it. The dressing room is brilliant at the moment which will make it easier for us all to perform well.”

Wisbech Town will hope for a second UCL Premier Division win of the season tomorrow when they entertain Rothwell Corinthians (3pm).
