Wisbech Town boss Gary Setchell hailed his players as “magnificent” after they produced their best performance of the season to cruise into the next round of the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon.
Setchell’s men crushed Felixstowe & Walton United 4-0 at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium thanks to goals from Alex Beck, Jon Fairweather, Michael Frew and an own goal, and the Wisbech boss was quick to praise the Fenmen after blowing away a side that sits at the top of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division by a whopping 17 points.
“We totally stopped them playing. We won every single individual battle all over the pitch. The lads were magnificent,” he said.
“It was a complete all-round performance. To beat Felixstowe - who have got 48 points out of a possible 51 and with all the players they have got and the arsenal they’ve got on the bench was an unbelievable performance.”
Wisbech took the lead thanks to Beck’s 13th goal of the season, before Fairweather headed a second after 20 minutes.
The hosts continued to dominate after the break – with young Danny Setchell impressing in central midfield – and Frew added a third three minutes after the break.
Felixstowe, who had hit 56 goals in just 17 league games before their trip to Fenland, couldn’t break through a solid Wisbech defence before they put through their own net to take the score to 4-0.
“I said before the game that I’m willing to gamble and try something new on the day to try and get the win and if we get beat 6-0 then I’d take responsibility for it,” Setchell added.
“It’s nine games unbeaten since I’ve been here – seven wins and two draws – which is pleasing. People say we haven’t played anyone but we’ve played someone now in Felixstowe and wiped the floor with them 4-0 and they’ve said we’re the best team we’ve played.
“We know we can produce solid performances. We’ve hooked ourselves onto the top six with the league form and we’ve just to keep repeating these performances to get in and around it.”
Wisbech will discover who they face in the second round of the FA Vase later this afternoon. The draw will take place at around 1pm.
Wisbech return to UCL Premier Division action this weekend with a trip to St Andrews (3pm).
St Andrews, who sit third-from-bottom in the standings, were Setchell’s first opponents after he took over as boss in September.
