WISBECH Town defender Simon Ashton will play for Spalding United tonight after signing dual registration forms with the United Counties League outfit.

Fenmen boss Steve Appleby has said the centre-back has joined Spalding “on loan” - even though he will now be able to play for Wisbech and Spalding because they compete in different leagues.

The 19-year-old, who signed for Wisbech from Boston United during the summer, has already played for The Tulips during a loan spell last season.

Appleby said: “I just want Simon to get some games as we’ve got a full squad at the minute.

“Centre-halves rarely get used off the bench so this deal makes sense.”

Ashton will play for Spalding at Deeping Rangers tonight as his Fenmen team-mates begin their defence of the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup at First Division Downham Town.

Wideman Matt Lunn has recovered from his wisdom tooth problem and is available for tonight’s league cup derby, as is defender Anthony Reeve who missed Saturday’s FA Vase triumph due to a wedding.
