TWO wins in three days are all in-form Wisbech Town need to clinch a fourth-placed league finish and a first trophy in 16 years.

A victory over Wivenhoe Town at the Tom Wood’s Beer Fenland Stadium tomorrow will guarantee the Fenmen fourth place in the Ridgeons Premier Division.

Success over Wroxham just two days later will see Steve Appleby’s side gain an even bigger prize, the Ridgeons League Challenge Cup - the club’s first silverware in more than a decade.

Appleby said: “We’ve asked for a big finish and so far that’s what we’ve had.

“We set a target to finish in the top six - which is now guaranteed - and to reach a final, so this season has been a great achievement already.

“In one sense we’ve taken a big step this year. The cup final will be a bonus but in the same breath nobody remembers runners-up.

“If we can win the final it would give the whole place a massive lift in terms of what we are actually capable of and what we can become. Winning quickly becomes a mentality.”

Goals from Andy Furnell, Scott Johnson and Matt Lunn secured a 3-1 victory over already-relegated Debenham LC on Saturday.

Monday’s 5-1 thumping of Newmarket Town made it four wins in a row for Steve Appleby’s side with Ash Stevens, Paul Jones, Matt Lunn, Lewis Thompson and Darren Jimson all finding the net.

Despite injury worries over Johnson, Stacy Cartwright, Callum Reed, Anthony Reeve and Paul Cousins the Fenmen boss insisted he wouldn’t rest players tomorrow ahead of the cup final.

Appleby said: “I’m a big believer that as a player you need to keep the momentum going. Winning becomes a habit and we’re on a roll.

“I won’t take unnecessary risks but I don’t want to rest players with one eye on the final. Before you know it you can lose both games and then it becomes a double kick in the goolies.

“We’ll give the final our all and we’ll learn from it whatever the outcome. Big games are what players and I as a manager long for.”
