SWIMMING: Wisbech Swimming Club claim silver in Anglian League after fantastic final performance
Wisbech Swimming Club produced one of their performances of the season to win the final fixture of the Anglian League – and claim second place overall.
The local talents travelled to Boston on September 23 and returned to Fenland with the second place trophy, 10 individual trophies and 20 new personal best times.
Competition between the final’s top three teams – Wisbech, Boston A and West Norfolk – was fierce, but strong swims from Wisbech saw West Norfolk eventually fall away into third place with 119 points.
Boston battled with Wisbech until the end but the Fenland swimmers claimed victory thanks to their points tally of 138. Boston’s score of 133, however, was enough to see them finish as league winners overall.
A successful day of racing also saw Wisbech swimmers claim nine second and four third places, with individual successes going to Mateusz Smialek (13/U 100m freestyle), Carl Purvey (Open 50m backstroke), Connor Loughlin (13/U 100m individual medley), Ellen Williams (Open 50m butterfly), Charlie Bourne (15/U 100m freestyle), Joe Tierney (13/U 100m backstroke), Lucy Ryan (Open 50m freestyle), Beth Dennis (15/U 100m individual medley), Louisa Rowell (13/U 100m butterfly) and Mary O’Neill (15/U 100m backstroke).
The club will hope to build on their positive league finish with more success at the Junior Fenland League final in Peterborough this weekend.
Meanwhile, the club is raising funds to replace the starting blocks and competition lane ropes it uses at its Hudson Centre home.
The public can help by putting their blue Tesco tokens into the Wisbech Swimming Club box in the Cromwell Road store. The box will be there until the end of this month.
