LIAM Knight proved he is one of the top young swimmers in the county, with six gold medals at the East Regional Championships.

The Wisbech swimmer surpassed even his own expectations, as he won the British age group category championship for 14 year olds.

Liam's dad Ian said: "It is a tremendous achievement which puts him at the top of the tree for swimming in the East Region.

"It set the stage for the National Championships in July where Liam will compete in nine individual events. He finished tenth last year nationally and is hoping to finish even higher this year."

The regional competition, held at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, brought together the best age group swimmers from across six counties.

On the opening day Liam, representing the City of Peterborough Swimming Club, finished third in the 200m freestyle in a national qualifying time and fourth in the 400m freestyle. He also set a national qualifying time in the lead leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay.

On day two he won the 200m individual medley and 100m backstroke in championship record times. He also won bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Liam's best day of the meet was day three, when he won gold in three events. He won the 200m breaststroke by three seconds, achieving the only national qualifying time, and won the 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly with championship record times.

On the final day Liam won his sixth gold in the 100m breaststroke, again gaining the only national qualifying time.

He finished the meet adding silver in the 400m individual medley, in national qualifying time, and bronze medals in the 200m butterfly and 4x100m medley relay.
