WHILE the senior side suffered last-day heartbreak Wisbech Rugby Club’s junior sides ended their season on a high.

The Under-8s put in a number of impressive displays to win the Boston Festival Cup on Sunday. Tries from Ewan Samways (2), Ben Wilcox (2), Nathan McKenzie and Luke Fox saw Wisbech beat the hosts 6-5 in their opening game.

Samway’s hat-trick helped his side demolish Melish 7-2 with Anton McNab (2), Jack Fowler and Wilcox adding scores in the team’s second match of the tournament.

Wilcox bagged himself a hat-trick in Wisbech’s third game and further tries from McKenzie, McNab and Fox helped the in-form youngsters beat Nottingham Moderns 6-4.

Wilcox continued his fine form grabbing a four-try haul in Wisbech’s 6-5 defeat of Oundle, with Jack Fowler running in two tries, before the dominant youngsters thumped Market Rasen 5-2 in the final.

Tries from Fowler (2), Wilcox, Fox and McKenzie clinched the trophy for Wisbech’s under-8s.

The under-9s almost bagged the club’s second trophy of the afternoon but slipped to an agonising defeat in their final at the same tournament.

Lewis Theobald, Thomas Sparrow, Finley Murdoch, Henry Mair, George Dady, George Paul and Geoffrey Kirky all ran in tries as Wisbech beat Mellish 2-1, Boston 6-0 and Nottingham Moderns 5-1 to reach the tournament’s final.

However, the under-9s couldn’t copy their younger counterparts as they slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against a strong Southwell outfit.

Elsewhere, the club’s under-13s side won their final game of the season against Spalding 31-19. Tries from Ed Harwin (2), Ethan Walfram-Ford (2), Ryan Huttler and three conversions from Harry Tysterman clinched the side’s deserved win.
