FIRED-UP coach Ben McCall has declared Wisbech Rugby Club are good enough to reach this season’s Junior Vase Final at Twickenham.
Wisbech have been in scintillating form this campaign winning all seven of their Greene King IPA Eastern Counties Division One matches as they look to mount a serious title challenge.
But tomorrow, the Harecroft Road outfit turn their attention to the dream of playing at the home of English rugby when they begin their pursuit of Vase glory with a second round game against Old Brentwood.
McCall said: “We’re hoping that a good cup run can bring some excitement back into the club as we are finding the league a little too easy at the moment.
“I honestly think we can make it all the way to Twickenham. The competition is all about giving small clubs the opportunity to play on the big stage and I don’t see why we can’t make it.”
Wisbech - who received a bye in the competition’s first round - go into the game in buoyant mood after a stunning 23-19 comeback win at Mersea Island on Saturday.
Trailing for the first time at the break in the league this season, scrum-half Mark Laws slotted home a penalty as Wisbech begun clawing back their 19-0 deficit.
Joe Barfoot and James Napier crashed over with Laws converting both tries before kicking two more penalties to secure Wisbech’s thrilling win.
McCall will watch his Wisbech side for the first time this season tomorrow after completing a spell in Afghanistan.
He said: “Mersea Island was a long way to travel on Saturday and lots of players were unavailable so to fight back and win was fantastic.
“I’m raring to go for tomorrow and I’m really excited to be back. I can’t wait.”
The match against the Essex-based side – who play at the same level of Wisbech in the national rugby pyramid - kicks off at Harecroft Road at 2pm.
