WISBECH Rugby Club enter the biggest game of their season full of confidence on Saturday after they tore up the form book to beat the league leaders at the weekend.

The first team face rivals Lowestoft and Yarmouth in their crucial Senior Vase third round clash at Harecroft Road. But the tie comes at a good time for Wisbech, who waltzed to a shock 20-8 win over London North-East Division Three leaders Newmarket on Saturday.

Shane Vickers, who has taken up the captaincy in the absence of injured skipper Tom Long, said the whole team were inspired by the thought of reaching the final at Twickenham next spring.

“The whole mood is different,” said Vickers. “Over the last two or three weekends the lads have been really up for it. The hunger and desire has improved.

“Everyone would love to play at the home of English rugby - it is an incredible motivation.

“They (Lowestoft and Yarmouth) have already come here and beat us this season. We have to take it to them this time and we are ready to do that. I think they are going to have a bit of a shock.”

Tries from Tom Martell and Joe Barfoot helped secure Wisbech’s convincing weekend win, which even prevented their table-topping visitors from returning to Newmarket with a bonus point.

Mark Laws also put in an authoritive performance with the boot, kicking half of the home side’s points, and Vickers said his troops were hitting form at the perfect time.

“The forwards and the backs combined brilliantly all game,” he said. “The forwards were strong up front and the backs were ruthless in attack. We were all over them and we concentrated for the whole 80 minutes.

“We have now got a full bench and we’re starting to look like a good squad and not just a good team.”

Kick off for Saturday’s tie is 2pm.
