The Wisbech Speed Skating team have reached the end of a successful season – here are some of the highlights.

This season, the team of 20 brought home gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as trophies, new British records and new British champions.

The team toured around the UK – from Ashbourne in the Midlands to Gravesend in the South – to compete in club races and British Championships and some members toured Europe.

The team’s six new members made their racing debut this season – in total the team accumulated 17 gold medals, 13 silvers and 19 bronzes in the British Championships. They have five British Champions and have broken seven records in Europe.

Eve McInerney, 16, of Leverington has done really well recently – not only breaking six British records and being the proud owner of four gold British Champion medals – she was selected to represent Great Britain in the European Juniors Championships in Portugal.

Eve also completed her first full marathon of 26 miles in a respectable 1hr 34mins to triumph in the Junior Girls category.

Another star this season has been Arthur Buckler, eight, of Wisbech – he became overall British Champion of 2017 in the Mini Boys category, and triumphed abroad in the Flanders grand Prix where he broke the current record by 16 seconds.

Arthur was also voted FISS Skater of the Year for 2017 and shortlisted for the National Living Sports Awards.

More highlights include new British Champions for 2017 – Flynn McGurk, Warren Eve and Dylan Taylor for the Boys relay teams for Indoors and Outdoors events.

Twin sisters Eve and Lucy McInerney were successful in their Indoor relay. The team completed a six-hour endurance race in Gravesend with two teams of five, finishing in 3rd and 4th places overall.

A spokesman said: “Fund raising has now begun in earnest by a newly formed committee, to raise funds for an outdoor track which has just been granted planning permission.

“Skaters currently have to travel to either Birmingham or London to compete on the only two dedicated outdoor skating tracks for the sport – the team are now training indoors for the up-coming indoor season which starts in January.

“For more information on what it’s all about, please come and see the team in action during our training sessions on Saturday from 5pm at Skaters roller rink in Walpole Highway.

“We welcome new members, even completely novice skaters! Full training will be given by their two fully qualified coaches.”
