London Division Three North East

Wanstead 21 Wisbech 14

WISBECH will need to bounce back from this shock defeat and produce a massive performance against leaders Beccles on Saturday to retain any chance of securing promotion.

The defeat at strugglers Wanstead followed a run of four successive wins and leaves Wisbech two points adrift of second-placed Canvey Island.

Wisbech were no where near there best and were soundly beaten by a side desperate for points.

From the start, Wanstead were on the front foot and Wisbech were second best in all departments.

The return of Tom Paybody and Ben Hoyles could do little to quell a home side's determined to make the most of a Wisbech side clearly having an off day.

Late try scorer Greg Brownlow and Tom Martell both found themselves in the sin bin causing Wisbech to play just an hour with a full compliment of players.

Andy Claydon produced a workmanlike performance scoring a try at the death and converting both tries that earned him the Viscribe man of the match.

Wisbech sent a side to compete in the Thorney Ten's Tournament in aid of Help for Heroes and managed to finish as runners up.

Although the competition was aimed at the veteran players, Wisbech sent a squad containing players young and old and those on the way back from long term injury including Tim Mason.

It is estimated that 2,000 was raised on the day and Wisbech would like to thank

Thorney Rugby Club for staging the event.
