WISBECH may go top on Saturday when they take on leaders Beccles away.

The Fenland club moved back to third spot when they scored four tries in Saturday's win over Wanstead and now trail Beccles and second-placed Canvey Island by just two points.

Wisbech head coach Steve Drawbridge said: "When I looked at the fixtures at the start of the season I hadn't pencilled in Beccles as a side we expected to beat away from home, but with the form that we're in anything is possible.

"They play a free-flowing running game like us so it should be a cracking match."

"We were very good for most of the game against Wanstead. Fly-half Will Pettit was outstanding and the backs gelled better than they have all season."

Wisbech ran in four tries in Saturday's win but had to work hard up-front against a side that were determined to defend.

Tom Paybody scored an early try and Adam Preece was unlucky with the conversion attempt.

Wisbech's second try, on the half hour, was well crafted by Pettit but saw James Napier injured in the process.

Napier, who made the initial break, fell awkwardly in the off-load to Pettit who beat two players before slipping the ball to Shane Vickers who scored in the corner and it was 10-0 at half-time.

Wanstead fought back but after the Wisbech forwards earned some hard yards

Chris Noon picked up and drove for the line to stretch the lead to 15-0.

In the last five minutes a good move saw Phil Martell receive the ball on the left wing and he finished well to complete the scoring.

Wisbech Rugby Club would like to thank everyone who attended their sponsors' lunch on Saturday and anyone interested in sponsoring the club should contact Drawbridge on 07515 119605.

Anyone interested in travelling with the team for Saturday's match at Beccles can do so by turning up at the club at 9.45am and paying 5.

Wisbech seconds suffered an 18-5 Norfolk League defeat at Holt on Saturday.

Dave Brodie was the pick of the backs and the scorer of Wisbech's only try in a second half that saw the local team put some good moves together and had the better of the line-outs where Lloyd Scott was outstanding.

Wisbech seconds entertain Norwich Medics on Saturday.
