FOLLOWING last week's disappointing start to their Rutland League Division Two campaign, Wisbech I produced the perfect response, winning two games in two days.

Saturday's exciting game at Ramsey remained in the balance until the final over but it was the visitors who stuck to their task to win.

The Ramsey batsmen put in a solid display and provided stubborn resistance at the crease but a good effort from Craig Johnson was rewarded with figures of 4-40 as the home side were restricted to 219-6 from 45 overs.

Wisbech opener Simon Freear was run out for a duck but the visitors dug in and James Williams (54 not out), David Wood (40), Gary Freear (38) and Chris Clark (31) pushed them towards their target.

The result went down to the wire but fittingly, it was Johnson who hit the winning runs with just two balls to spare.

Wisbech made it a double win in the league on Sunday when they beat visitors Barnack by 11 runs.

The opening partnership of 93 between Simon Freear (74) and Dan Mason (26) put the home side in control

Despite a middle order wobble, Wisbech recovered with a good tail end partnership between Michael McDowell (20) and James Fountain (26 not out) and finished with a score of 215-8.

Barnack were always behind the run rate thanks to a good team bowling performance from the home side and no fewer than five bowlers took wickets.

The attack was led by Matthew Parrin's 3-37 and the visitors ran out of overs 11 runs short.

There were mixed fortunes for the Wisbech sides playing friendly matches at the weekend.

On Saturday, Wisbech II failed to contend with the pace of Hayley West Anglia bowler Matt Darlow who took 5-12 as the home side collapsed to 132 all out in 36.1 overs.

Only James Dod offered any resistance to score 40 for Wisbech.

The visitors batsmen were equally effective and reached their target after 36.1 overs and with eight wickets standing. Dod and Matthew Parrin were the wicket-takers.

But there was better news for the young second team on Sunday when they cruised to a 77-run friendly victory over visitors Fosters.

A fine top-order performance from the Wisbech batsmen put runs on the board early on. Jordan Trundle led the way with 40 not out and there were good contributions from Sam Darlow (30) and Sam Wylie (36) as the home side scored 222-8 from 45 overs.

Fosters were never in the hunt as the Wisbech bowlers stamped their authority on the game with fine controlled spells.

Lyndon Waters was the pick of the bowlers with 5-18 from 10 overs and Fosters were dismissed for 145.

Saturday's friendly for Wisbech III was a local derby at home to Long Sutton II and it was the visitors who won the match.

Wisbech loaned Ivan Burgess to the visitors and he immediately made an impact to take 3-14 as the home side struggled.

Jordan Trundle (18) proved to be the top scorer as Wisbech crumbled to 135 all out.

The game could have swung back into Wisbech's favour had it not been for a fine innings of 78 not out from Long Sutton's Alan Wright.

Lyndon Waters again impressed with the ball as he returned 2-26 but the visitors reached their target with six wickets intact.
