ENGLAND HOCKEY ASSOCIATION CUP, THIRD ROUND

SOUTHGATE 5 WISBECH 1

WISBECH visited National League Premier Division Southgate, the country's most celebrated hockey club, and gave a good account of themselves in defeat.

Wisbech, cheered on by a large travelling support, started this EHA Cup third round clash confidently. But nothing came of their attacks and they were ultimately made to pay for not scoring whilst on top.

Southgate stepped up their game just before half time and converted two short corners very clinically just before half time to take an undeserved two goal lead into the break.

Wisbech were confident that they could get back into the game but were soon dealt a blow when a shot across goal which was going wide was deflected in by a defender to give Southgate a third goal.

Wisbech went on the attack. Drew Harvey and Brad Apted both came within inches of grabbing a goal back. It was Southgate who added to the scoreline though, catching Wisbech twice on the break as the tired visitors searched for a goal.

The 5-0 score certainly didn't reflect the game and Wisbech got a deserved consolation late on when Luke Smith was fouled and Apted stepped up to score from the penalty spot.

Wisbech's cup run is over but they can hold their heads high after giving one of the country's best teams a fright. The cup run has again been supported exceptionally well and the team thanks everyone for their very vocal support.

Tomorrow sees a return to NE14 Hockey East Premier A action at home against City of Peterborough II (2.30pm start).

Wisbech: James Sheppard, Nick Osborn, Jon Shippey, James Mansfield, Doug King, Matt Levanda, Drew Harvey, Dan Martell, Sam Blunt, Luke Smith, Brad Apted, Sam Markille, Charlie Baxter, Joe Melton, Matt Wate, Gary Freear.
