WISBECH Hockey Club will look to seal an historic season this weekend as they bid for more silverware in the national mixed plate finals.

The mixed team take on Preston in the semi-final in Sheffield tomorrow, with the prestigious England Hockey National Mixed Plate final to be played on Sunday.

It is the first time that the club have reached the finals weekend and follows a glorious year, which saw the ladies’ first team claim the league title after an incredible unbeaten season.

Mixed captain Drew Harvey said: “We’re going to do what we’d normally do on any other week. We like being the underdog. If people think we come from a little town called Wisbech then we might just surprise teams.

“The team we have at the moment have been playing together for six or seven years and we are also reaping the rewards of having a brilliant junior policy.

“We won’t give in. We are gutsy and gritty and we won’t bow to the occasion.”

Wisbech have been in magnificent form in this year’s competition, trouncing Stevenage 4-0 in the second round before beating Letchworth 2-1 in the quarter-final.

Ladies vice-captain Verity Allen said: “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind of a season. Just getting to the final is a great achievement and it’s been quite an inspiration for the rest of the club.

“We have more junior players than we’ve ever had before and the ladies will be playing one level below the national league next year. Now we just want the mixed team to join the party.

“If we won this then it would really top our season off. It couldn’t really get much better.

“We’ve got nothing to lose, we’re a small town and a relatively small club compared with our opponents. But we’re a small club with a big heart and we’ll give it everything.”

Wisbech warmed up for their finals weekend with a 10-2 win over a Chairman’s Select XI at a special sponsors day last Sunday.
