In poor conditions, with driving rain and strong winds, the Wisbech Grammar School first Rugby XV rolled up their sleeves and put in a solid team performance that delivered a 16-5 win against Wymondham College.

Saturday’s game saw Wisbech coming up against the elements, but in the first half, Wisbech Grammar’s fly-half Henry Thornton, from Wisbech St Mary, kicked two penalties to put the side 6-0 up.

Thornton continued to control the territory in the second half, with the back line nullifying Wyndonhams running threat with some outstanding defence. When Wisbech Grammar School had the ball the forwards made serious yards with the ball in hand allowing for second half tries from Henry Oldershaw-Ellis (Spalding) and Matt Holden (Wisbech).

Head of Rugby Alex Laybourne said: “It has been a superb weekend for Wisbech Grammar School rugby. I was delighted with the performance and work ethic of the 1st XV on Saturday, who thoroughly deserved their win.”
