Wisbech lost more ground on leaders Godmanchester after Foxton dropped anchor and played out a draw.

Batting first, Josh Bowers continued his fine form with 32 but Wisbech found themsleves in a spot of bother before Paul Edgeller (42no) and Sam Rippington (30) put on 70 for the eighth wicket to get them to 199-9.

Edgeller (2-21) and Rippington were on the money with the new ball and Foxton, after falling behind the rate, blocked out the remaining overs, finishing on 178-8. Captain Gary Freear took 3-39, with James Williams claiming 2-23.

While Wisbech were being frustated by Foxton, Godmanchester surged on with an eight wicket win over Burwell II.

The gap between the two Tucker Gardner league title hopefuls, with six games left, is 18 points. Up next for Wisbech is a trip to Waresley, while Godmanchester travel to Foxton.

Freear said: “It’s not the end of the world - we just couldn’t get them out.

“Paul Edgeller and Sam Rippington put on 70 for the eighth wicket, which shows we’ve got batting down the order which we probably have not had in previous years. Then they maybe bowled too well at the start of the Foxton innings, because they fell behind the rate and made no attempt to chase the target down.

“In fact, everybody bowled well. We had plenty of chances - there were three dropped catches, a run out chance missed and a difficult missed stumping - we couldn’t take them.

“Waresley have been dragged back into the relegation battle because of Saffron Walden’s win, which means they will have something to play for. It will make it a tougher game, although hopefully it means they will play positively against us.

“Paul Edgeller is going to be missing for three weeks, which gives Brodie Ellis a chance to step up and take the new ball.”

Simon Freear was in devastating form as Wisbech II kept up the pressure on CCa Senior Division Two leaders Chippenham with a 47 run win over high-flying Hardwick and Caldecote.

Batting first, Shane Sleath (51), Matt Esser (35) and Charles Baxter (36no) were in the runs as Wisbech posted 189-5.

Hardwick’s openers got off to a solid start but Lyndon Mallett (2-52) and Jonathan Garner (2-13) picked up crucial breakthroughs before Freear (6-17) ran through the middle and lower order.

There were several stand-out performances as Wisbech III thrashed Fulbourn Institute II by 206 runs.

Ben Tarrett (94) and Paul Strickle (67) piled on the runs as Wisbech III recorded an imposing 253-6.

Ian Bell was chief destroyer with the ball, taking 7-25 as Fulbourn II crumbled to 47 all out.
