EASTERN COUNTIES

DIVISION ONE

Stowmarket 22 Wisbech 5

WISBECH Rugby Club failed to bounce back from their EDF Junior Vase misery and lost to a strong Stowmarket side that made best use of the conditions.

Wisbech, who lost 29-12 in a quarter-final match against Castleford the previous week, were well beaten on their return to league action.

Man of the match James Comben scored Wisbech's only try in the first five minutes to give the visitors an early lead.

But the Fenmen were not able to capitalise and allowed Stowmarket to get back into the game.

Facing a half-time deficit of 12-5, Wisbech were forced to defend for long periods and it wasn't until the final minute of the game that the home side scored their last try.

Wisbech skipper, Matt Desborough sustained an injury that curtailed his involvement and Rudi Van de Merwe took over and led the players well.

Wisbech entertain bottom-placed Ely at Harecroft Road tomorrow.

# WISBECH'S second XV came away with a 7-7 draw from Swaffham in the Norfolk Merit League on Saturday.

Centre Rob Charlton scored the visitors' try and Sam Anderson kicked the conversion.

Wisbech were short of a number of players and Phil Reid returned from injury to have an outstanding game.

The second team are also at home tomorrow.
