WISBECH failed to pull off a Cambridgeshire County Cup shock on Saturday as they were sent crashing out of the competition by Saffron Walden.
The 36-17 defeat was Wisbech’s first of the season but it came against a side who play in London North-East Division Two, two levels higher than the Harecroft Road outfit.
Fly-half Will Pettit, winger James Napier and stand-in captain Shane Vickers all crashed over for tries - but Wisbech paid the price for defensive errors, shipping five tries.
Manager Cliff Humphreys said that the competition was never a priority and, although it was “disappointing to lose any game”, Wisbech had given an “excellent account of themselves” against strong opposition.
Title-chasing Wisbech host third-placed Harwich and Dovercourt in an important Greene King Eastern Counties Division One clash on Saturday.
