Williams' ton secures victory

AN outstanding century from James Williams helped Wisbech Town Cricket Club's first team to a comfortable 80-run Tucker Division One victory over Granta second team on Saturday.

David Wood scored 67, Simon Freear knocked 42 and Sam Ablutt added 37 not out as Wisbech declared on 284-4 after 42 overs.

Granta's opener R Brown went out for a duck before M Peacock (63), D Norman (54) and B Miller (39) put them back on track.

But no other batsman in the team made a telling contribution.

Chris Clark was Wisbech's best bowler with 4-36 from 11 overs and and Craig Johnson, Mark Sheppard, Williams, Brad Apted, Adam Hidgson and Gary Freear all took a wicket each, with Freear bowling just one ball as Granta were all out for 204.

Adrian Clare's 45 wasn't enough to prevent Wisbech second team from suffering a seven-wicket Hunts Division Two defeat to Nassington second team.

Wisbech were all out for 143.

After Clare, the only telling contribution came from 23 extras.

Visitors Nassington took just over 32 overs to reach their target and had seven wickets to spare.

Tom Bourne (1-12) Lyndon Waters (1-35) and Matthew Parrin (1-42) were Wisbech's wicket-takers.

Leverington won for the first time this season in the West Norfolk Division Two and produced an excellent all round performance.

Leverington won the toss and on a green wicket decided to bowl first and soon had The Creakes in trouble with Ian Cooper (25-3) and Aaron Cobb who conceded just four runs from eight overs, bowling a good line and length.

Simon Gilbert replaced Cobb and was soon into the wickets getting his best figures for Leverington 25-5 and 10 for those were wides or no balls.

Damien Allen came on and bowled six hostile overs to finish1-12 as The Creakes struggled to 73 all out.

Leverington were in trouble as Glyn Wilson fell for only five with 13 on the board but Paul Rockliffe, 22 not out, including two sixes, and Ricky Brown, 41, featuring eight fours, put them within touching distance of victory.

Brown was dismissed when Leverington needed only four to win, leaving Rockliffe and Stewart Cuthill to see them home.

An impressive 65 from James Sheppard and some fine bowling from Paul Strickle ensured Wisbech third team claimed a West Norfolk Division Three win at Beetley.

Wisbech opener Ken Smart knocked 39 runs and Sam Darlow weighed in with 32 not out as the visitors finished on 173-6.

Beetley's No. 2 M Smith replied with 56 but he received little support from his team mattes with opener S Densham (39) the only other home batsman to make a telling contribution.

Strickle finished on 4-23 and Adrian Peck took three wickets for 43 runs as Beetley were all out for 148.

Wisbech fourth team's opener Adam Thomas struck 61 runs but only three other home batsmen reached double figures as they fell 70 runs short of their 220 target against Hospital in the West Norlfolk Division Four on Saturday.

Howard Atkins hit 11, Dan Martell, 12, and D Haynes, 11 as Wisbech stumbled to 150-9.

David LeMoir was the pick of the Wisbech bowlers with 3-49 and N Pack and M Parrin each took 2-34.

Despite a 42 from David Wood, Wisbech's first Sunday side suffered a four-wicket Rutland Division One defeat to Oundle.

Matthew Parrin and Charles Baxter each added 25, Simon Freear hit 21 and Ivan Burgess scored 19 as Wisbech scored 188.

Craig Johnson was the pick of the Wisbech bowlers with 2-22, but Oundle finished on 191-6.

Doddington took bragging rights and valuable Fenland Sunday League points from neighbours Wisbech seconds.

Wisbech No. 3 Jonathan Strickle hit 49 and Dominic Stannard weighed in with 31 as the visitors finished on 225-9.

R Faunch was in fine form bowling for Doddington, taking 3-15 and J Freeman took 2-21.

D Martell led the Doddington response, staying at the crease for the entire innings and making 95 not out.

He was assisted well by N Usher (23), P O'Connor (24) and R Moden (25) as Doddington finished on 226-5.

Adrian Peck was Wisbech's best bowler with 3-28.
