A PHENOMINAL display saw Wisbech Grammar School student Liam Knight come away from the East Region Championships with seven medals - including one gold.

He competed at the University of East Anglia, Norwich over the last two weekends.

The championships were held for swimmers from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk who had achieved the required qualifying times.

Knight achieved gold in the 400m individual medley.

He won four silvers - in the 200m individual medley, 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 100m breaststroke, and bronze medals in the 200m breaststroke and the 400m freestyle relay team event.

Knight, a member of City of Peterborough Swimming Club, achieved personal best times in all his events increasing his rankings for the Amateur Swimming Association National Championships to be held at the end of July at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, where he will now be competing in eight events.

During the East Region Championships swimmers compete for the BAGCAT award by gaining points in four different disciplines, namely the 100m events, the non freestyle events, the individual medley and the freestyle events.

This is used to name the best overall swimmer in each age group.

Knight's superb performance placed him third overall, gaining 2,559 points.

His City of Peterborough coach Ben Negus said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Liam.

"It proves that he can produce top quality swims against the best swimmers of the East of England and sets him up to compete strongly at national level.
