Wisbech returned to winning ways thanks to a courageous comeback and a terrific treble last weekend.

Alex Watson dotted down three times to help his side to a 24-15 victory over Norwich Crusaders.

Wisbech found themselves 5-0 down at half time after a cagey first half but the local lads kicked into gear in the second period thanks to the excellence of Watson.

He claimed his first try of the afternoon after receiving the ball on the outside and showing a turn of pace to sprint through the Crusaders’ defence to score.

Sam Anderson, who captained the side, kicked the conversion to give Wisbech the lead for the first time.

Anderson played a big part in Wisbech’s next try, breaking through a tackle and setting off on a storming run before recycling the ball to Watson who crossed the line for a second converted try.

Crusaders narrowed Wisbech’s lead to six points with a successful kick for the posts but the hosts were soon able to extend their advantage through the boot of Anderson.

The afternoon then took a negative turn for Wisbech, with Ricky Harnwell being forced off with a shoulder injury and Crusaders scoring a well-worked try, but the home side dug in and score themselves following a flowing team move that was finished off by hat-trick hero Watson.

Anderson successfully converted the try again and Wisbech were able to hold on for a well-deserved win – only their fourth on home soil this term.

Stand-in skipper Sam Anderson said: “It was grit in the first half from the Wisbech defence that allowed us to win the game.

“Despite conceding the lion’s share of possession in the first half strong defence kept Crusaders to only one try.

“In the second half we strung some excellent moves together to win the match.”

Wisbech, who are now eighth in the table, will look to claim back-to-back wins before Christmas – but face a tricky test in the form of a trip to in-form Ely Tigers.

The Tigers are sat in third in the standings and won 29-25 at Holt on Saturday.
