WISBECH Town's FA Cup march continues after another excellent performance was rewarded with a 2-1 victory at Solihull Borough on Saturday.

Once again, the Fenmen rose to the challenge of the big game and thoroughly deserved their win, which now sets up a fourth qualifying round game at Unibond Premier side, Fleetwood Town, on October 28.

As with their heroic victory at Redditch United in the second qualifying round, the Fenmen put on a display of exactly how to play away from home.

In a superb team performance, stubborn and effective defending combined with quick counter-attacking football from the midfield and forwards gave Wisbech the edge over their opponents from the Southern League Division One Midlands.

Wisbech began the game well and chances for both sides were limited in the opening 20 minutes. The home side's best opportunity came on 13 minutes when skipper Jamie Petty struck a shot from the edge of the box but Nick Conroy got down well to save.

Five minutes later, the Fenmen produced their first meaningful effort on goal. The excellent Stuart Cobb, a constant threat bombing down the right wing, was played in on goal by Liam Nimmo but his shot was comfortably saved by home keeper Tony Breedon.

Within two minutes, Wisbech went close to opening the scoring when Cobb's cross from the right found its way to Lee Hudson at the back post but his brave header was blocked by the on-rushing Breedon.

Wisbech proved to be a constant threat from set pieces and crosses and Solihull were given a warning of things to come on 28 minutes when Liam Harrold's cross was headed just over the bar by Nimmo. However, the Fenmen's threat was realised three minutes later. Andy Lodge's well delivered free kick was met by the head of Martin McNeil, who rose highest to steer the ball in to the net.

Borough had no answer to their opponents and it was 2-0 just nine minutes later. The home defence failed to clear Darren Jimson's ball in to the danger area and Harrold swivelled on the ball six yards out to power his shot home.

Within a minute of the kick-off, it could have been 3-0 as Nimmo broke the offside trap and ran in on goal but he was denied a goal by Breedon's despairing save.

A similarly bright start to the second half from Wisbech had the delighted travelling Fenmen fans chanting 'easy, easy' but the game was back on eight minutes in to the second half.

A Borough free kick on the edge of the box was flighted to the back post to Richard Munday, who guided his header back in to the danger area and Phil Rowe nodded in from close range.

For the first time in the match, Wisbech looked under pressure and Conroy's goal was threatened by a long-range shot that just skipped past the post.

Borough put the pressure on and for 15 minutes, Wisbech looked vulnerable. Rory May should have done better with a diving header but he directed his effort wide and Danny Collins' long-range shot ended a good move but ballooned high and wide.

Again May spurned a good chance when he dragged his shot wide but the Fenmen got back in to the game and were gifted a welcome reprieve on 78 minutes.

Munday was dismissed by referee Sinclair after his blatant pull-back on Nimmo earned him a second yellow card.

Borough continued to push forward but there was no way past McNeil, Danny Hammond and Danny Hussey, who put in the kind of performances that summed-up the Fenmen's determination and heart.

There was still time for more drama as Lodge also saw red for a second bookable offence but Wisbech held on to their lead to spark joyous scenes from both team and fans.

Wisbech manager, Dick Creasey said: "I thought we played very well. We bossed the game in the first half, passed the ball well and took our chances.

"I was disappointed with the goal we gave away and we were under pressure for a while in the second half but Borough changed things at half time so we knew that they would come back at us."

Looking ahead to the Fleetwood match, Creasey said: "Our first reaction to the draw was disappointment but on the other hand, it is a game that I think we can win.

"It would have been even better if it had been at Fenland Park but with our good run of away form, it is not a game that we fear."

He added: "We will certainly be going there to win it and if we could make it to the first round proper of the FA Cup it would be a magnificent achievement."

The Fenmen face another cup game on Tuesday evening when they entertain Sawston United in the Cambs Invitation Cup.
