Ridgeons Premier Division: Walsham-le-Willows 1 Wisbech Town 2
STRIKER Nick Davey scored his first league goal for Wisbech Town as they beat struggling Walsham-le-Willows 2-1 today.
Davey, who has only recently returned from a loan spell with Yaxley, hammered home Wisbech’s second goal, which proved to be the winner at The Meadow.
The Fenmen had looked to be in for a frustrating afternoon against third-from-bottom Walsham as the home side threw men behind the ball to keep the game goalless at half time.
But centre-back Neal Spafford broke the deadlock minutes into the second-half when he nodded home a corner won by Davey.
Wisbech continued to pour forward and Davey was soon on the scoresheet himself, netting from inside the box to double the visitors’ lead.
The Fenmen had chances to put a gloss on the scoreline but none were taken and, as the final whistle approached, Walsham began to apply some pressure of their own.
When Lee Sim rocketed a left-foot shot past Ryan Rayner and into the top-corner, Wisbech were forced into frantic defence.
Walsham brought on former Cambridge United manager John Taylor as they bombarded the Wisbech box but the Fenmen held out for a vital three points.
Wisbech host Great Yarmouth Town next weekend.
