UPBEAT boss Steve Appleby says Wisbech Town will go into Saturday’s FA Vase clash boasting the best run of form he has seen since he took charge.

The Fenmen have won eight consecutive games and have not lost since their 9-0 drubbing at Mildenhall Town on September 20.

But Appleby’s troops will need to emerge victorious from a 204-mile round trip to Racing Club Warwick if they wish to extend their golden run in the second round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

Appleby said: “This is the best form I’ve seen since I’ve been in charge. But I know it could end whenever.

“The boys are buzzing and enjoying their football. We’re buoyant and we just can’t wait for the next game. The big thing is not to look too far ahead. I don’t worry too much about runs.

“It wasn’t too long ago that we lost three in a row and people were saying our season was over. I wasn’t worried about it then and I’m not worried about it now.”

Warwick play one level below Wisbech at Step 6 of the non-league ladder but Appleby said he would be taking nothing for granted.

He said: “The club and the chairman will say the Vase is high on the priority list. For me, winning the league is number one but obviously I want to go all the way to Wembley, have a great day out and come home with a trophy.

“The problem is there’s a hell of a lot of teams who also want to do that. I know Warwick are flying themselves and they score goals so it should be a good game.”

Goals from Liam Nimmo (2), Callum Reed and Chris Bacon helped Wisbech beat in-form Woodbridge Town 4-1 on Saturday.

Bacon was on target again last night as his stunning free-kick set the Fenmen on their way to a 5-0 thrashing of Haverhill Rovers.

His brace was added to by Lewis Thompson, Liam Nimmo and an own goal as Wisbech moved up to third in the Ridgeons Premier Division.

But there was some bad news for the Fenmen as reliable midfielder Paul Jones decided to quit the club in order to seek first-team football.

Appleby said: “I didn’t want to lose Paul but I know he’s frustrated and I’ll never stop anyone from playing football. I’m disappointed but we’ll carry on.”

Striker Nick Davey is also set to stay at Yaxley for a month after Appleby agreed to extend his loan.

Wisbech also travel to Norwich United in the league on Tuesday. The Fenmen have drawn Haverhill Rovers in the Cambs Invitation Cup Second Round.
