CYCLIST Jody Cundy won two gold medals and beat three world record times at the Paralympic World Cup at Manchester Velodrome last week.

Cundy, from Walpole St Andrew, won gold in the 1km time trial on Thursday and was part of a trio that won a team sprint gold on Friday.

His time in Thursday's final of 1.07.405 was one of nine word record breaking times set at the championships on the day but none will stand as official world records due to an absence of anti-doping administrators at the venue on the day.

On Friday, Cundy was on the final leg of a three-man team who set a new world record of 50.068 in the morning heat, which they then went on to break with a time of 49.958 in the final.

This time stands as a new official world record as drug tests took place after the race.

Cundy said: "I was shocked when I looked at my times at the end of the races, because I didn't feel that I was racing particularly quickly.

"I'm ecstatic to achieve such good times. It's obviously disappointing that my first record wasn't made official and a lot of people were upset about that, but I'm just happy to be in such good form."

Cundy, who had the lower right part of his leg amputated when he was three, switched from swimming to cycling two and a half years ago.

He said: "I think my form has a lot to do with the fact that my body has fully adjusted to the change in sports. I've also increased the intensity in my gym work and I'm feeling more powerful."

Cundy will compete in a national event in July and goes to the Beijing Olympics in September.
