Two Fenland swimmers win 22 golds at county championships

Two local swimmers Liam Knight and Lee Clarke both pupils of Wisbech Grammar School, recently competed in the Regional Final of the National Arena league held at Coventry's 50m Pool.  They were competing for City of Peterborough Swimming Club and were instrumental in helping the club win the event and gain entry into the National A final.  The final, which will be held at Ponds Forge Sheffield in April, will be contested by the top 10 clubs in the country this is the first time in the history of COPS swimming club that they have qualified.

 

Liam Knight had three individual swims in the Regional Final gaining third place in the 200IM Open age group in a 2 second personal best (PB) of 2.14.05, this he followed up with two first places in his own 15 & Under age group in the 100m Butterfly 1.00.36 and 100m Breaststroke 1.11.63 again both PB's. Liam was also a member of both the Open and 15 & Under age group relays all of which stormed to a least a top three finish. Liam’s brilliant year of swimming has also meant that he has broken six County records some of which have stood for over 8 years.

 

Lee Clarke also gained fantastic PB's in his events for the 11 & Under age group category, gaining first place in the 50m freestyle 32.49 and third place in the 50m Butterfly 36.51.  Lee was also a member of the 11 & Under relay team that won both the 4 x 50 Medlay and 4 X 50 Freestyle Relays.

 

Three other local swimmers Ellen Williams, Chloe-Jade Coulson and Emily Pilbeam also competed for COPS SC in the Division Two East Region Final.  

 

Ellen competed in three individual events, she came first in the Open age group 100IM 1.11.02 and second in both the 15 & Under 100m Butterfly 1.11.76 and 100m Freestyle 1.03.33 gaining new PB's in all three events. 

 

Chloe-Jade came first in her event the 13 & Under 100m Breaststroke 1.26.70.

TWO Fenland swimmers won a staggering 22 gold medals between them at the British Gas Cambridgeshire Championships.

Liam Knight, 15, from Wisbech cleared the board by winning gold in all 13 of his events and rewrote the record books, achieving county records for the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 50m and 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley.

Further to this Knight's times of 58.79 in the 100m backstroke and 2.04.61 in the 200m backstroke earned him Junior Men Short Course Records for the ASA East Region.

Knight was awarded the Bagcat trophy for his age group for the fifth year running

His fellow City of Peterborough Swimming Club member Lee Clarke, 11, from Guyhirn won nine golds, three silvers and three bronze medals over the two weekends of competition.

He was crowned the Bagcat champion for the 11-year-old age group.

Clarke improved on most of his personal bests during the championships including smashing his 1500m time, which he set last December, by nearly two minutes.

His 800m freestyle earned him a club record.

He currently has an impressive 11 qualifying times for this year's regional championships.

Ellen Williams, 14, from Wisbech, won gold in the 100m individual medley and 1500m freestyle and a further six silver and four bronze medals.

Williams gained eight regional qualifying times and matching Clarke, her time for 800m freestyle was a club record.

Emily Pilbeam, who turned 13 during the championships, recorded a personal best in all of her events on the way to winning two golds, a silver and a bronze medal and qualifying for two regional events.

Chloe-Jade Coulson, 13, from Manea was finalist for many events and won two bronze medals.
