AN exciting left-sided midfielder with experience of academy football at two professional clubs may join Wisbech Town at the weekend.

But on the flip-side a lack of first-team football has prompted full-back Ben Russell to consider his Wisbech future.

Wisbech manager Roy McManus has been given permission to talk to Davy Shepherd, 19, who currently plays for Spalding United.

Shepherd joined the Lincolnshire club from Boston United's Centre of Excellence and was once a member of the Peterborough United Academy.

McManus said: "Davy's a real talent with lots of natural ability and he's very exciting to watch. I've been tracking him for a while. I'll speak to him this weekend, and I'm confident he could sign for us. He would add some balance to the side as well, as we don't have too many left-footed players."

Shepherd has a broken toe and is unlikely to be available for at least two weeks.

Former March Town United player Russell played for Leamington on Saturday. The son of former Hares manager Alan Russell is still a Wisbech player, but is allowed to play for the British Gas Business Football League Midland Division side without a transfer.

McManus said: "It's very disappointing because I'm looking for the squad to rally together through these difficult times. I understand that nobody wants to be on the bench, so I told him to play in the reserves for a while and I would monitor his form. But he didn't take too kindly to it.

"I'm still hopeful I can persuade him to stay at Wisbech.
