THE river season started last Monday and many anglers, including myself, were on the banks by 4am.

I was fishing on the Twenty Foot, near Hobbs Lot Bridge, and found the fish in a feeding mood. After a couple of evenings of pre-baiting I ended the session with 15 bream to 5lb and five tench to five and a half. All my fish were caught on a combination of white and red maggot.

Syd Starr was also fishing the Twenty Foot at Shepperson Bridge and landed five bream and two tench.

Daniel Hall found the fishing bream feeding on the Old Nene, near the old railway bridge and landed six to four and a half lb along with plenty of rudd and skimmers.

The bypass section also fished well last Monday.

Plenty of the anglers should be on the bank this weekend and if it is cloudy and overcast the Twenty Foot Drain is worth a try. If it is sunny it will be hard as the waters will be very clear. If this is the case, head to places like the Old Nene, Forty Foot Drain, Sixteen Foot Drain and Main Drain.

Last Sunday Townsend Angling Club travelled to Wilcroft Carp Lakes at Wisbech St Mary and Martin Woolnough came out on top with 149lb of carp. All of his fish were caught on the pole using pellet. Second place went to Denis Sandbridge, who fished a waggler and landed 85-12 and Martin King was third with 76-8. The winning pair was Woolnough and Terry King with 187-12, Martin King and Barry Peterson came second with 132lb and third place went to Alan Driver and Andrew Gordon with 125-12.

Over at High Flyers, Ben Townsend won two open matches. On Saturday he needed 312lb for top spot, followed by John Penhaligan's 165lb. The following day Townsend won with 205lb and Steve Norman was second with 165lb.

A week last Wednesday Whitemoor Angling Club fished the pool at Fields End, Doddington and Tony Moll won with 47-9. Steve Smalley was second with 43-10 and Paul Ringham was third with 36-14.

At East Delph Steve Winters won Sunday's open with 130lb and Ian Frith was second with 97lb.

The Buttonhole Lake is fishing well and Andrew Carter needed 74-6 to win the three-hour Tuesday evening match. Jamie Crown was second with 58lb and Dave Lee was third with 55lb.

Wimblington Angling Club fished the Magpie Lake at Pidley and Shaun Strachan won with 52lb of carp to 3lb. Second place went to Daniel Hall with 31lb.

Mill View Angling Club fished Yew Lake at Decoy and Lee Pullman won with 83lb. Andy Day was second with 62lb and Des Proud, third, with 58lb.

This week Mill View will be at Alders Farm, Buckinghamshire and all anglers fishing are reminded to take three keep nets.

Mill View senior citizens fished Magpie Lake at Pidley a week last Wednesday and Martin Parker came first with 77lb, with John Pratt second with 66lb and John Smith third with 58lb.

Thursday evening's open at the pool at Fields End Water was won by Martin Kirk with 34lb and Gavin Wright came second with 28lb.

At Decoy, Doddington angler Barry Mason was pipped into second place in both Saturday and Sunday open matches, fished on the Beastie Lake. Kev Wadge won on Saturday with 114lb and Mason had 86lb.

On Sunday, March angler Jonny Small came top with 138lb and Mason had 118lb.

Finally, this Sunday's March and District Club match has been postponed as most anglers are tied up with team events, but Tuesday's evening match will be go ahead at Creek Cottage. Draw time is 5.45pm and fishing is from 6.30-9.30pm.

The junior matches have been moved from Monday nights to Wednesday nights, starting next Thursday (June 26). Draw time is 6pm and fishing is from 6.30-8.30pm.
