WISBECH Town's FA Cup march continues after another excellent performance was rewarded with a 2-1 win at Solihull Borough on Saturday.

The Fenmen again rose to the challenge of the big game and thoroughly deserved their win.

It sets up a fourth qualifying round game at Unibond Premier side Fleetwood Town, on October 28.

A superb team performance - stubborn and effective defending combined with quick counter-attacking football - gave Wisbech the edge over their Southern League Division One Midlands League opponents.

Wisbech began well and chances for both sides were limited but after 18 minutes the Fenmen produced their first meaningful effort on goal.

The excellent Stuart Cobb, a constant threat on the right, was played in on goal by Liam Nimmo, but his shot was comfortably saved by Tony Breedon.

Wisbech proved to be a constant threat from set-pieces and crosses and the Fenmen's threat paid off on the half-hour.

Andy Lodge's well-delivered free-kick was met by the head of Martin McNeil, to steer the ball into the net.

Borough had no answer to their opponents and it was 2-0 just nine minutes later. The home defence failed to clear Darren Jimson's throw in to the danger area and Harrold swivelled on the ball six yards out to power his shot home.

A similarly bright start to the second half from Wisbech had the delighted travelling Fenmen fans chanting "Easy, easy" but the game was back on eight minutes into the second half.

A Borough free-kick on the edge of the box was flighted to the back post to Richard Munday, who guided his header back into the danger area for Phil Rowe to nod in from close range.

Borough stepped up the pressure and, for 15 minutes, Wisbech looked vulnerable. Rory May spurned a good chance when he dragged his shot wide but the Fenmen got back into the game and were gifted a welcome reprieve on 78 minutes.

Munday was dismissed by referee Sinclair after his pull-back on Nimmo earned him a second yellow card.

Borough continued to push forward but there was no way past McNeil, Danny Hammond and Danny Hussey, who put in the kind of performances that summed-up the Fenmen's determination and heart.

There was still time for more drama as Lodge also saw red for a second bookable offence but Wisbech held on to their lead to spark joyous scenes from both team and fans.

Wisbech manager Dick Creasey said: "I thought we played very well. We bossed the game in the first half, passed the ball well and took our chances.

"I was disappointed with the goal we gave away and we were under pressure for a while in the second half, but Borough changed things at half-time so we knew that they would come back at us."

Of the Fleetwood match, Creasey said: "Our first reaction to the draw was disappointment but, on the other hand, it is a game that I think we can win.

"It would have been even better if it had been at Fenland Park, but with our good run of away form it is not a game we fear.

"We will certainly be going there to win it - and if we could make it to the first round proper of the FA Cup it would be a magnificent achievement."

- WISBECH Town are certainly enjoying their cup games this season and, after their progression in both the FA Vase and FA Cup, they booked their place in the next round of the Cambs Invitation Cup on Tuesday evening.

The 1-0 preliminary round victory over Sawston at Fenland Park came courtesy Danny Hammond's first-half penalty, awarded for a push on Liam Harrold.

The Fenmen created the best chances but good keeping from Sawston's Phillip Peachey and wayward finishing kept the Wisbech fans on the edge of their seats.

- COACH travel is available for fans wishing to travel to Fleetwood. The coach will leave Fenland Park at 8am on Saturday, October 28, and will cost £15. Places are limited and anyone wishing to travel should contact Spenny on 07793 863849 or John Petch on 01945 584333.

- WISBECH Town will be hosting a special meeting next Thursday (October 26). The meeting will give fans the opportunity to discuss the proposed move to a new ground and other issues relating to the club's future. It will start at 7.15pm at the Fenland Park Social Club.
