Dick Creasey has acknowledged the size of the job he has on his hands following his confirmation as Wisbech Town manager for next season.

Creasey temporarily took his place in the Fenmen hot-seat following the departure of Brett Whaley at the end of March, and was expected to step aside in the summer to allow a new boss in.

Wisbech chairman Paul Brenchley interviewed a number of candidates for the position, but announced Creasey as boss at the club’s presentation night on Saturday after a number of talks last week.

“It was made clear to me that the supporters, players and board wanted me to stay on,” Creasey said.

“Last week I had numerous conversations with the chairman before I met with him on Thursday and was told that they want me to stay on.

“We had a long chat, I said ‘let me sleep on it,’ but there are certain people in the club that you just want to help because they’re really genuine people.

“I spoke to him again on the Friday and gave it the green light, then didn’t hear from him again until the Saturday when he phoned me from the presentation evening.

He said ‘I’m here and I want to announce it,’ and I told him to go for it.”

Creasey, back for his fourth spell at the club, knows that he has a tough job on his hands to restore the Fenmen to their former glory.

Wisbech were considered as title contenders before the season began, but an inconsistent campaign, littered with a number of disappointing defeats, saw them finish in eighth in the UCL Premier Division.

Creasey said: “The hard work begins now. We need to build a better squad; one that can compete and wants to compete.

“We want a team that wants to play for Wisbech Town for the right reasons.

“There’s one or two players that have been at the club for many years, who, if I’m honest, weren’t good enough last season.

“I’ll sit down with them and say ‘look, there’s a place for you at Wisbech Town but you need to want to be here for the right reasons.’

“I don’t want to be wasting my time if we’re not near the top of the league.”

Creasey also wants a re-shuffle of his backroom staff before the new season begins in August, and says that former Fenmen favourite, Paul Cousins, is part of his plans.

He said: “I need to sort my back room staff, but I know for a fact that Paul will be involved. He wears his heart on his sleeve and he’s someone that we want around at the club.

“It’s going to be a hard summer but we’ve got to get on with it and start preparing for next season.”
