Tense finish as Wisbech Town Cricket Club fall to thrilling three-run defeat against MCC

WISBECH Town Cricket Club were just three runs away from a recording a memorable triumph over the MCC this week after a thrilling two-day game at Harecroft Road.
Set 251 to win yesterday (Thursday), Wisbech came agonisingly close to causing a major upset - but fell to defeat in the last over with only three runs required.
Captain Gary Freear (43) led the way for Wisbech before an eighth wicket partnership of 74 between Dom Stannard and Simon Freear had the MCC rocking.
But the hosts fell agonisingly short, with Simon Freear, Stannard and Tom Bourne all dismissed in a frantic last eight balls.
Captain Gary Freear said: “The last match we played was a tie and this was another great game. It always seems to be a brilliant fixture.
“We got what we wanted out of it, some good competitive cricket before the start of the season. It’s a game that’s a pleasure to play in and we are very lucky as a club to have it.
“The young lads really enjoyed themselves and they were a credit to the club. We did play a young side and they stood up really well - I must have been the second oldest in the team!
“From a personal point of view, I didn’t feel great. I wasn’t timing anything but it’s a good sign if I’m still scoring a few. The club as a whole looks in good shape.”
Wisbech return to action tomorrow, when the second team will host Fenland rivals March II in a friendly. Action continues on Sunday, when Wisbech play their first fixture of the season in the Rutland League.
Wisbech begin their Tucker Premier Division One campaign against St Ives next Saturday.
