Captain Gary Freear hopes Fenland derby success can kickstart Wisbech’s miserable season.

The town team sit second-bottom of the Cambs & Hunts Premier League top-flight after winning only one of their opening six games.

They make the short trip to The Avenue to take on March – another struggling side who sit one place above them in the Whiting & Partners Division One standings – tomorrow, 12.30pm.

“It’s been a tough start to the season,” said skipper Freear. “We haven’t fired with the bat.

“The only time we put a decent score on the board it led to our only win of the season against Ramsey.

“I haven’t got us off to the good starts that I did last year and that means there’s more pressure on the other guys further down the order.

“Losing our opener Danny Haynes to a broken finger hasn’t helped and we’ve also had to chop and change our line-up a lot.

“But we’re confident we’ll climb the table. We’ve played five of the current top six teams but we’ve got a run of games in the bottom half of the table coming up.

“Getting a win at March would be a good way to get the season going. The mood in the camp is still pretty good.

“We don’t become a bad side overnight. It’s just a case of enjoying our cricket and I’m sure the results will come.”

Wisbech slipped to a five-wicket home defeat at the hands of second-placed Eaton Socon last Saturday.

They were dismissed for just 124 after collapsing to 46-6 at one stage. An unbeaten 35 from William Gowler carried them into three figures, but the visitors eased to victory in smooth style.

Wisbech are also having a tough time on Sundays as they attempt to defend their Rutland League Division One tite.

They were beaten by 82 run at Ketton Sports last weekend after slumping to 66 all out in response to their hosts’ effort of 148.

Kieran Haynes (3-28) was the pick of the Wisbech bowlers with Wian Pretorius, Kieran Hallatt and Joe Dunning claiming two victims apiece.

But only overseas player Pretorius (13) and skipper Dom Stannard (11) made it into double-figures as Wisbech were undone by Ketton bowler Zeeshan Manzoor, who took 7-14.

Wisbech are through to the semi-finals of Jaidka Cup 20/20 competition. They go to Lincolnshire side Bourne on Wednesday night.
