Ridgeons Premier Division

Haverhill Rovers 1 Wisbech Town 1

WISBECH boss Steve Appleby was happy to take a point from a hard battle at Haverhill on Tuesday night.

The Fenmen had the heroics of goalkeeper Alex Street to thank as Rovers bossed large periods of the match and went on the rampage after snatching a 68th minute equaliser with a shot from 12 yards after Wisbech failed to clear their lines.

Scott Cubberly headed Town into a 33rd minute lead following Billy Smith's cross.

Rory Harper smashed the underside of the Haverhill crossbar with a 25-yard volley moments before the equaliser and Robbie Harris and Stuart Cobb had decent chances to win it for the Fenmen.

The match saw Ashley Murrell, recently signed from Appleby's old club, Skegness, make his Wisbech debut at right back.

Appleby said: "It was a hard battle and the lads fought their hearts out. We had chances to win the game but I think Haverhill would have been more disappointed with a draw than us.

"Alex Street had a great game in goal and Ashley Murrell had an excellent debut."

Wisbech host bottom club Wivenhoe on Saturday and travel to Wroxham on Thursday.

Appleby said: "I'd like to think we could take three points from the Wivenhoe game but football doesn't always work like that and the sport has a way of kicking you in the teeth when you're down.

"Wroxham are in the semi-finals of the FA Vase and that shows what a top side they are. It will be a good challenge for us.
