Wisbech Town 1 Midlenhall Town 3

A JOHN SANDS hat-trick ensured Wisbech remain without a point after three league games.

Wisbech player-manager Gary Setchell was bitterly disappointed with his side's performance at The Nest on Tuesday, only singling out 18-year-old wing-back Lewis Thompson for praise.

He said: "Lewis has the heart of a lion. He flew into his tackles and gave absolutely everything. I could do with two or three more like him because the majority of my players just didn't turn up."

A 28th-minute Scott Cubberely strike gave the Fenmen a 1-0 FA Cup win at Ely on Saturday, netting the club 750.

Setchell said: "We've been magnificent in our two away games this season but very poor at home. We had a couple of injuries on Tuesday but we don't make excuses. I have a squad of 18 players who I believe to be good enough to play at this level and some of them need to take a good look at themselves."

The visitors, who have enjoyed a 100 per cent winning start to the season, took the lead when Sands scored with a curling left-footed shot from 20 yards.

Wisbech fought their way back into the match and Cubberley and Thompson both came close to finding an equaliser.

Sands doubled the lead with a close-range finish on 57 minutes and then scored a volley three minutes later for 3-0.

An 80th-minute Luke Catchpole own goal following a corner completed the scoring.

Wisbech play league games at home to Woodbridge on Saturday and away to King's Lynn Reserves on Wednesday night.

They then play Needham Market away in the next FA Cup qualifying round the following Saturday.
