WISBECH Town caretaker boss Roy McManus has revealed he is ready to sign several experienced players if he is appointed manager.

McManus has taken temporary charge of the Fenmen following the resignations of Ian Jones and Mel Mattless last week.

McManus said: "There are two or three players that I could sign quite quickly. I feel that we need a couple of more experienced lads to help settle the team.

"I can't go for them at the moment because it would be unreasonable for me to talk to players knowing that I may not be in the manager's seat in a few weeks.

"If I was asked to do the job I would give it 100 per cent. It has been great to be in charge of the team during the past week.

"I think that it's important that the club makes a decision sooner rather than later but they must make sure they find the right person."

McManus has overseen the Fenmen's last two matches and although both matches were defeats, the players' performances have impressed him.

Wisbech led Ridgeons Premier high-flyers Mildenhall Town by 2-0 thanks to goals from Billy Smith and Grant Rider in Saturday's home league match.

But the visitors showed their title credentials to storm back and win 5-2.

And against Premier Division leaders Wroxham on Tuesday evening, Wisbech acquitted themselves well and were unfortunate to lose 2-0 in the Ridgeons League Cup fixture.

Wroxham had to wait until the 75th minute before opening the scoring and they doubled their lead with a last-minute penalty.

McManus said: "The lads rolled their sleeves up and produced a tremendous performance against Wroxham.

"Their first goal was a total fluke, a cross that looped over everyone and dropped into the net.

"They didn't like the fact that we had a go at them and there were some nasty tackles flying about.

"Some of the decisions from the officials were disgusting. James McManus got an elbow in the face and it went unpunished while Lewis Cook was scythed down and we didn't even get a free-kick.

"There were a couple of dodgy offside decisions and I found out after the game that the replacement linesman, used when the referee failed to attend the match, was none other than the Wroxham chairman.

"But nothing should take anything away from our performances in both matches.

"We lost our concentration in the second half against Mildenhall but the lads learned from that and improved against Wroxham.

"The most important thing now is that they take these performances into Saturday's game at Histon Reserves. If the team plays in the same way then we will get a result."

Lee Day's fitness will be assessed before the game tomorrow (Saturday) after picking up a rib injury on Tuesday.

James Muffett is suspended for the match but Wayne Morton, Stuart Ablett and Stuart Brown are all available for selection.
