THE lakes brought mixed fortunes for local anglers last weekend.

A mixture of sunshine and rain made fishing patchy.

I fished at High Flyers Lake at Ely. Anglers were expecting big catches because 200lb was needed to be in the top three at this venue last Tuesday, but some anglers failed to get a single bite this time. All the fish here seemed to be shoaled up at the top end of the lake, where the top four anglers fished.

Out in front on Saturday from peg 28 was Nigel Wright with 58lb and John Buckingham from Chatteris was a close second with 56lb 12oz.

On Sunday,, from peg 29, Steve Norman took top spot with 74lb 8oz of carp, using cat meat on the hook and a nine metre pole. Second place went to Colin Tasker with 23-8.

Over at Decoy, the Saturday Open was fished on Elm and Cedar Lakes and the top two anglers came from Elm Lake. John Whincup took top spot with 92-2 of fi carp to 2lb. Smudge Smith was second with 79lb.

On Sunday they fished the Beastie Lake and Shaun Smart won with 98-6. Tom Wallis was second with 78lb and Chris Barley, third, with 77lb 4oz.

Mill View Angling Club was at Decoy last Sunday, fishing Elm Lake and Kevin Medlock won with 49lb of fi carp to 2lb. He caught all his fish up in the water using pellet as hook bait. Graham Dean was second with 45lb and Chris Saunders, third, with 39lb 8oz.

Details of this Sunday's match are being arranged, so contact Alex at the shop for further information on 01354 660566.

At Head Fen Lake Ben Lawrence took top spot with 46-10 of carp to 4lb. Most of his fish fell to sweet corn. Matt Ayres and Bob Coulson finished joint second with 37-12.

A week last Wednesday, Whitemoor Angling Club fished their club lake and with no carp showing, top place went to Shaun Strachan who fished for roach and finished with 14lb 8oz. In second place with a 3lb barbell and a few roach was Ray Tyler and Tim Green was third.

Whitemoor's next match is on May 14 at Highflyers Lake.

A week last Tuesday, Sammy McSpadden won a Button Floodlight Evening League match with 43lb 6oz of carp.

Andrew carter was second with 30lb 8oz and Jamie Crown was third with 26lb.

Last Tuesday saw the senior citizens in action on the pool at Fields End Water and Dave Pearce took top spot with 69lb 4oz of carp to 3lb. Ray Scappen was second with 34lb 12oz.

Finally, once again, there were some exceptional weights last Tuesday at High Flyers Lake, where John Ode landed 224lbof carp to 8olb for top spot.

John fished close in using cat meat as hook bait. Second place went to Kenny Gammon with 205lb and Titch Marshall was third with 177lb. All three anglers fished in the bay in the high peg numbers.
