The Saints were hoping to make yet more knockout history by sealing their place in the third round but came up against a superior Norwich CBS side who ran out 4-1 winners at the ABC Meats Stadium.

Duke said: “It was a disappointing performance. We got nowhere near the standards we expect from the lads and the result reflected that.

“It was a great day for the club but our performance didn’t match the occasion.”

Youngster Aidan Sewell found the net on Saturday but that was as good as it got for the Saints against a side that had already beaten them twice in recent months.

“After the game we could see that the lads knew that they had let themselves down so I’m sure we’ll see a reaction in our coming games,” Duke added.

“It was nice to see young Aidan get on the score sheet but it was one of very few positives in our performance.

“We wish Norwich CBS all the best in the next round.”

Duke’s side return to knockout action tomorrow night (15) with an Invitation Cup clash with Ely City (7.45pm).
