Goalkeepers are expected to save goals - not score them.

But that’s exactly what happened at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium last Saturday as Wisbech Town recorded their fifth straight UCL Premier Division success with a 2-0 win over Harborough Town.

Fenmen stopper Sam Vince stepped up and slotted home from the spot in the second period after striker Alex Beck had given the home side the advantage in a tie plagued by the weather.

Having had three dual-registered ‘loan’ players recalled by their parent clubs in recent weeks, manager Dick Creasey called up 18-year-old midfielder Kieran Hamilton from the reserves to bolster his squad.

Neither side created much in the way of clear-cut chances during a lacklustre first half, although it was the Fenmen who went closest, Billy Smith seeing a shot blocked by the Harborough keeper whilst Sam Murphy blasted a spectacular volley just wide.

A slight tweaking to the formation at half-time was the key to unlocking the packed Bees’ defence. Six minutes after the break, Michael Frew crossed into the box for Alex Beck to slide in his 11th goal for the Fenmen.

The narrow lead never looked in danger but, given the slippery conditions, it was no bad thing when Smith was brought down inside the area in the 76th minute.

Vince swapped goalkeeping for goal-scoring as he beat his opposite number from the penalty spot for his second goal of the season and to seal the three points.

The introduction of Hamilton for his first team debut was the only other moment of note in a game which won’t live long in the memory but took the Fenmen up to seventh in the table.

Wisbech are back in action tomorrow with a trip to Eynesbury Rovers (7.45pm). Eynesbury currently lie six points above Wisbech in fifth.
