Wisbech Town boss Gary Setchell has admitted the Fenmen are fighting to keep striker Alex Beck at the club.

Beck has been subject to interest from fellow UCL Premier Division side Boston Town in recent weeks and showed why he is on their radar with four goals in Wisbech’s 5-0 FA Vase win over Bourne Town on Saturday.

“Boston have come in for him so keeping him here is going to be hard,” Setchell said.

“He’s a Boston lad and the travelling is a bit much for him. I’ve spoken to him and I’ve told him I hope he doesn’t leave.

“He’s a big part of what we’re doing here and we desperately want to keep our good players and add one or two, not lose one or two.”

Beck fired himself to the top of Wisbech’s goal-scoring charts with an impressive four-goal haul on Saturday, with midfielder Kieran Hamilton adding the other goal with a superb solo effort.

Wisbech’s big win has earned them a home tie against in-form Felixstowe & Walton United on October 21.

The Seasiders have won all 11 of their league matches so far and have conceded just three goals away from home.

“We started on the front foot, put them under pressure, played some good football and scored some good goals,” Setchell added.

“We’ve kept another clean sheet and in my three games we’ve scored 10, let in none and won all three which is pleasing.

“We’ve got the nucleus of a good side but we have to cut out the silly and poor play.

“We have 15 minute spells where we look a bit ragged but on the whole I thought the lads applied themselves properly.

“We let Bourne know we are a higher-level team and we let them know we’re a strong team. If we’d have scored seven or eight I don’t think they could have complained.”

The knockout clash also saw veteran goalkeeper Paul Bastock, who has played in over 1,230 games, make his first FA Vase appearance. He deputised for first-choice goalkeeper Sam Vince, who was unavailable.

Wisbech return to league action on Saturday. They host Wellingborough Whitworths (3pm).
