Wisbech Town boss Dick Creasey wants his players to launch their United Counties League Premier Division title challenge with a performance worthy of the occasion.

The Fenmen entertain Wellingborough Town in their curtain-raiser at the Elgoods Stadium on Sunday, 5pm. The match is expected to attract a bumper crowd as it forms the final part of an organised ground-hopping tour of the area over the weekend.

And Creasey admits it is essential his men start as they mean to go on by opening their points account at the first attempt.

He said: “It looks like being a big day for the club with a big crowd expected, and hopefully we can rise to the occasion.

“Every team wants to get off to a winning start and we’re no different. Three points in the first game instantly creates a buzz and builds confidence.

“I’m expecting the title race to be more open this year and we’ve made no secret of the fact we’d like to play a part in it.

“There look to be plenty of good sides, but I don’t expect one of them to run away with it.

“Pre-season has not gone as well as we would have liked due to a couple of friendlies being cancelled.

“We’ve only had three games in the end and managed to win them all, but I’m far too long in the tooth to read anything into those results.

“It all starts on Sunday and we need to try to begin with the right performance and right result.”

Wisbech have warmed up for their first competitive outing by triumphing against two sets of local rivals in the past week.

They won 4-1 at March Town in the annual BKD Cup fixture last Saturday when Sam Murphy, Billy Smith, Curtis Knight and Kieran Hamilton found the net.

And the Fenmen then triumphed 3-2 at Wisbech St Mary on Tuesday night. Michael Frew hit the winner after Josh Ford and Adam Millson had seen strikes cancelled out.

But Creasey could still add to his squad ahead of the Premier Division kick-off.

“I would like to add a couple more lads to the squad if I’m being honest,” added Creasey, who is chasing a left-sided player and right winger.

“We’ve got a few niggles in the camp. We’re not short on numbers, but we are a little light on quality.”

Wisbech also have another friendly next Tuesday (August 1) when Burnley bring a squad to the Elgoods Stadium.

It will feature youngster Harry Limb, who swapped the United Counties League for the Premier League in a dream February transfer.

Limb is set to play against Wisbech on the night of his 18th birthday.
