Dick Creasey says his Wisbech Town men are worthy of their place in the final of the United Counties League Cup - despite having to watch the Fenmen overturn a two-goal deficit and then triumph in a penalty shoot-out to progress.

Wisbech were left staring a second semi-final defeat of the season in the face after Desborough Town raced into a 2-0 lead last Saturday, but a heroic second-half display - including a strike from Curtis Knight and a wonderful overhead equaliser from Michael Frew - forced extra-time.

That period ended goalless so penalty kicks ensued, and Wisbech were 4-1 victors thanks to Frew, Luke Kennedy, Adam Millson and Billy Smith keeping their cool from the spot and goalkeeper Sam Vince saving a Desborough kick.

Creasey said: “The best team won on the day. No-one can deny us that.

“We had the desire and willingness to stay in the game and I’m as proud of anyone of the players. They dug in and we’ve duly won without anybody complaining too much.

“We can put that on the back burner now and look to get some league points.

“Getting into the final is a nice little bonus. We haven’t snuck our way into the final – we’ve played some good sides on our way and what a final it will be.”

Wisbech will take on fierce rivals Yaxley in the final on May 1, but the Fenmen will first turn their attentions back to UCL Premier Division business this weekend and their clash with Harborough Town (3pm).

Wisbech have edged their way towards the division’s top six in recent weeks and last week enlisted the services of a Football League starlet to help them on their climb up the standings.

Peterborough United Alfie Connor made his Fenmen bow at Desborough last Saturday, and Creasey believes the young defender will benefit from getting first-team matches under his belt at the Elgoods Fenland Stadium.

“You could tell he was nervous when he went on last weekend,” Creasey said.

“We threw him in right at the deep end at right back and to be fair his first touches weren’t great but he settled in and enjoyed playing a part.

“Credit must go to him because he’s not played a lot of football recently. Over the last 10 weeks all we’ve talked about is 17-year-old boys progressing and now we’ve got another one.

“He’s a Peterborough boy but he’s come to get some experience with us and his performance last weekend won’t have done any harm.”

Wisbech currently occupy 8th in the league standings and are level on points with Newport Pagnell Town in 7th with a game in hand.
